Lucknow: On the death anniversary of Rohith Vemula, a student from Hyderabad University who tragically took his own life in 2016, a commemorative ceremony was held at the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) headquarters in Lucknow. The ceremony was marked by floral tributes and the offering of garlands at a portrait of the late student leader. The event was led by Dinesh Kumar Singh, the outgoing Vice President of the UP Congress, and Anil Yadav, the outgoing General Secretary and in-charge of the organization.
In his address, Dinesh Kumar Singh expressed deep concern over the systemic discrimination that led to Rohith Vemula’s tragic death. He stated, “Rohith Vemula, a Dalit student, was driven to suicide as a result of the harassment and oppression faced at the hands of the administration of the University of Hyderabad. This was not just a suicide, it was a murder by the institution itself. The Congress party will continue to fight for justice, ensuring that no other student is ever forced into becoming another Rohith Vemula.”
The ceremony was attended by several Congress leaders, including Ved Prakash Tripathi, the outgoing District Congress President, along with prominent members such as Brijendra Singh, Sanjay Sharma, Sushila Sharma, Dr. Richa Sharma Kaushik, Manoj Tiwari, Nitant Singh, Vijay Pandey, and others.
The gathering stood in solidarity with the ongoing fight for justice and equal rights for students, particularly from marginalized communities. Leaders present reaffirmed their commitment to challenging the institutional oppression that continues to affect Dalit and backward students across educational institutions in India.
The event served as a reminder of the need for systemic reform in Indian educational institutions to ensure a fair and inclusive environment for students, especially those from Dalit and other underprivileged backgrounds. The Congress party remains committed to pursuing justice in the case of Rohith Vemula, ensuring that his sacrifice is not forgotten and that no student ever faces the same fate again.
